Before you start

When can you switch business energy?

It comes down to one date: when your contract ends. It's usually on your bill, and the bill check finds it in seconds.

Mid-contract

Check your exit terms first

Ofgem says most suppliers won't let you leave a fixed contract early unless you've agreed a termination clause or you pay an exit fee.

Contract ending soon

The time to switch

Fixed contracts have a switching window that opens a few months before the end date. You can sometimes switch during it without a fee, and the new contract starts when the old one ends.

Deemed or rolling rates

Switch any time

On deemed, out-of-contract or rolling rates you're on a variable contract, and Ofgem says you can switch to a new supplier at any time.

Source: Ofgem, Switch your business energy supplier. Your current supplier can object to a switch, for example if you owe it money. More on out-of-contract rates and leaving a contract early.

Not sure which one you're on?

Upload your latest bill. Meet George finds your contract end date and tells you whether you can switch now.

How it works

How do you switch business energy with Meet George?

Four steps, all online. Bring your latest bill; the whole thing takes about 20 minutes.

Want the detail first? Read our complete guide to switching business energy suppliers.

  1. Step 1

    Check your bill

Upload a PDF or photo of your latest bill. Meet George reads your usage, rates, standing charge and contract end date, and tells you in seconds whether you're in your switching window.

  2. Step 2

    Sign your letter of authority

Create your account and sign the letter of authority on screen, pre-filled from your bill. It lets Meet George request quotes for your meters.

  3. Step 3

    Compare live quotes

See prices from the suppliers you can switch to end to end. Every quote shows the supplier's rate and our 1p/kWh fee as two separate numbers.

  4. Step 4

    Sign online

Pick a quote, ask Meet George about anything in the contract, and sign. Your new supplier runs a credit check and Meet George submits the switch.

What it costs

One fee, on its own line: 1p/kWh.

Every quote shows two numbers: the supplier's rate and our 1p/kWh fee. You pay the fee; it's collected through your supplier over the life of your contract. No sign-up fee, no subscription, nothing tucked into the unit rate.

Example

A business using 20,000 kWh a year pays 20,000 × 1p = £200 a year in fee, on top of the supplier's price.

Questions

Switching business energy: common questions

Something else? See all common questions.

How long does it take to switch business energy?

With Meet George the online part takes about 20 minutes: your bill, the letter of authority, your quotes and signing. Your new supply then starts on the date in your new contract. In your switching window that can be the day your current contract ends; on out-of-contract or deemed rates it can be sooner.

Can I switch business energy if I'm still in contract?

Usually not without a cost. Ofgem says most suppliers won't let you switch before the end of a fixed contract unless you've agreed a termination clause or you pay an exit fee. Your switching window opens a few months before the end date, and that's the time to switch.

Can my current supplier stop me switching?

It can object, for example if you owe it money, Ofgem says. If that happens, contact the supplier as soon as possible to find out what the issue is and resolve it, then the switch can go ahead.

Will my power be cut off when I switch?

No. Switching changes who supplies and bills you, not the wires or pipes. Your gas and electricity keep flowing throughout, and you keep the same meter unless your new supplier arranges otherwise.

Do you compare every supplier?

No. Today you can switch end to end with ScottishPower, Drax, EDF and E.ON Next through Meet George, and we show them up front. Ofgem points out that the best option may be with your current supplier, so it's worth comparing their renewal price too.

What does Meet George cost?

A flat 1p/kWh fee, shown on every quote as its own line next to the supplier's rate. You pay it: it's collected through your supplier over the life of your contract. A business using 20,000 kWh a year pays £200 a year in fee. There's no sign-up fee or subscription.

Your next energy contract doesn't need an expensive middleman.

Upload your latest bill and Meet George tells you in seconds whether you're in your switching window. If you are, you can get started straight away. If not, he'll remind you when it opens.
