How to Verify Your Actual Rate
Don't just estimate - find out exactly what you're paying.
Ask Your Broker for Their Commission Rate
Contact your current broker and ask them to disclose their commission rate in writing. Since October 2024, brokers are legally required to tell you if you ask. If they refuse or give vague answers, that's a red flag - reputable brokers have nothing to hide.
Check Your Contract Paperwork
Commission disclosure in energy supplier contract documentation has been mandatory since October 2024. Look for terms like "TPI commission", "broker fee", or "uplift" in your paperwork. The amount should be stated in pence per kWh or as a total figure.
Compare to Current Market Rates
If your current unit rate is significantly higher than market rates (check Ofgem's wholesale data), the difference may include substantial broker commission. A typical wholesale-to-retail markup is 3-6p/kWh for supplier margin - anything beyond that could be broker uplift.

The commission ranges in this calculator are based on publicly available data and regulatory research:
- Ofgem's Non-Domestic Market Review (2024) found that some brokers were "nearly doubling the cost of energy contracts" through hidden commissions.
- Our analysis of Bionic's Companies House filing calculated an average commission of approximately £536 per customer based on their £86.3m revenue from 161,000 SMEs.
- Industry standard ranges of 2-5p/kWh are widely cited by energy consultants and consumer groups, with crisis-era rates documented at 4-7p/kWh during 2022-2023.
- Energy Ombudsman data shows 88% of broker complaints relate to sales practices, including undisclosed commission.
Every broker's commission varies. This calculator provides illustrative ranges - your actual rate may be higher or lower. The important thing is to ask and find out.
Your next energy contract doesn't need an expensive middleman.
